  3. 3Read the resulting percentage and letter grade below.
What This Calculator Does

The Grade Calculator converts a raw score (points earned out of points possible) into a percentage and a letter grade. It is meant for a single assignment, quiz, or exam — enter the points you scored and the points it was worth, and it does the division and grade lookup for you. It uses one fixed, general-purpose letter-grade scale rather than any specific school's grading policy.

Formula and Grading Scale Used by THE CALC
Percentage Score

The core calculation.

Percentage = (Points Earned ÷ Points Possible) × 100
Letter Grade Scale

A fixed 10-point scale with no +/- grades.

90%+ = A · 80–89% = B · 70–79% = C · 60–69% = D · below 60% = F
Practical Real-World Examples
Scoring 92 out of 100 points on an exam
Percentage = (92 ÷ 100) × 100 = 92%
92.00% — Letter Grade A
Scoring 76 out of 100 points on a quiz
Percentage = (76 ÷ 100) × 100 = 76%
76.00% — Letter Grade C
Scoring 27 out of 50 points on an assignment
Percentage = (27 ÷ 50) × 100 = 54%
54.00% — Letter Grade F
Tips & Considerations
  • This uses a fixed 10-point US letter scale: 90%+ = A, 80–89% = B, 70–79% = C, 60–69% = D, below 60% = F. There are no +/- grades and no custom cutoffs.
  • Points Possible must be greater than zero; a zero, blank, or invalid value returns no result.
  • The percentage is Points Earned ÷ Points Possible × 100, rounded to two decimals for display.
  • Many schools use different letter-grade cutoffs (for example 93%+ for an A). Check your syllabus if your institution's scale differs.
  • This calculates one assignment or exam at a time. To combine several assignments into a course average, use the GPA Calculator or add the points yourself first.
Frequently Asked Questions

How is my grade percentage calculated?

Percentage = (Points Earned ÷ Points Possible) × 100.

What letter-grade scale does this use?

A fixed scale: 90%+ = A, 80–89% = B, 70–79% = C, 60–69% = D, below 60% = F. It does not support +/- grades or custom cutoffs.

Can I use this for a course average instead of one assignment?

Yes, if you enter your total points earned and total points possible across all assignments. For a credit-weighted course average, use the GPA Calculator instead.

Why does the calculator show no result?

Points Possible must be a number greater than zero. A blank, zero, or invalid entry returns no result.

Does this match my school's official grade?

Only if your school uses the exact same percentage-to-letter cutoffs. Many schools use different scales, so check your syllabus.
