What Is the Mode?

The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a dataset. A dataset can have one mode (unimodal), two modes (bimodal), or more than two modes (multimodal). If every value appears only once, the dataset has no mode. The mode is the only measure of central tendency that can be used with categorical (non-numeric) data, though this calculator works with numeric datasets.

How It Works
Single Mode (Unimodal)

One value has the highest frequency.

Dataset: 3, 5, 5, 7, 9 → Mode = 5 (appears 2 times)
Multiple Modes (Multimodal)

Two or more values share the highest frequency.

Dataset: 3, 7, 7, 12, 14, 14, 21 → Modes = 7 and 14 (each appears 2 times)
No Mode

Every value appears only once — there is no repeating value.

Dataset: 2, 4, 6, 8 → No mode (all values are unique)

Important Considerations
  • The mode is the only measure of central tendency that can identify "most common" in a dataset.
  • A dataset with all unique values has no mode. This is normal and the calculator will report it clearly.
