- 1Select your Unit System (US MPG, Imperial MPG, or Metric L/100 km).
- 2Enter total trip distance.
- 3Enter vehicle fuel efficiency rating.
- 4Enter current price of fuel per gallon or liter.
- 5Enter number of travelers/passengers splitting fuel costs (defaults to 1).
- 6View total trip fuel cost ($) and individual cost per person ($).
The Trip Cost Calculator computes total fuel expenses for a journey and divides the total cost evenly among passengers to facilitate fair expense sharing on group road trips.
Calculated using the standard fuel cost engine.
Total Cost = (Distance / MPG) × Fuel Price [Or (Distance/100) × L/100km × Price]Divides total fuel cost among travelers (minimum 1 passenger).
Cost per Person ($) = Total Fuel Cost / Number of PassengersFuel Needed = 450 / 30 = 15.0 Gallons
Total Fuel Cost = 15.0 × $3.60 = $54.00
Cost per Person = $54.00 / 3 = $18.00Trip fuel cost = (300 / 30) × 3.60 = $36.00; Per person = 36.00 / 3Fuel = 64 L; Cost = 64 × 1.75 = $112.00; Per person = 112.00 / 4- Fuel expense only: This calculator models direct fuel costs only. Highway toll fees, parking tickets, lodging, food, vehicle wear-and-tear, and insurance are not included.
- Passenger count minimum: The engine automatically enforces a minimum passenger count of 1 to prevent division by zero or negative split errors.
- Return trips: Enter total round-trip mileage if you are calculating costs for a round-trip journey.
Should I enter round-trip distance?
Yes. If you are planning a round trip, enter the combined total distance (outbound plus return mileage).
Does the calculator account for road tolls?
No. Tolls, parking, and maintenance expenses should be calculated separately and added to the fuel total.
How is the cost per person calculated?
It divides the total trip fuel cost by the number of passengers. The passenger count is forced to at least 1.
Does it include tolls, parking, or wear?
No. It only estimates fuel cost from distance, efficiency, and fuel price; other trip expenses are not modelled.
